The images below begin with an interesting set of graphics showing how the popularity of books fluctuates over time. My first book was published in 1996 and it was titled The Fragile Peace. You had to have a publisher in those days and books only appeared in print from traditional publishing houses or vanity publishers. I have experienced both methodologies in years gone by.
Kindle books arrived in the UK in 2010 and self-publishing took off.
In the traditional publishing model, the publisher bears all the costs and risks of publication but retains most of the profit if the book is successful. In self-publishing, the author bears all the costs and risks but earns a higher share of the profit per sale.
Amazon has had a huge impact on the book-selling industry, driving many brick-and-mortar bookstores out of business and making inroads into publishing as well.
True self-publishing occurs when the author controls the entire publishing process from start to finish. That, by the way, is the model of my authorship.
All writers have one thing in common. They are all vain. But I wish them all good luck.

The older books obviously have more sales whilst the younger ones are currently the most popular as you can see from the easy read images below.
Don't let anyone tell you that self-publishing is not worth the effort.
